There are many causes of oily hair, including heredity, changes in hormones, the type and texture of your hair, or even using too many products without rinsing them out properly. Using products designed for oily hair is the best first step, but there are some reasons to try out some home remedies for greasy hair.

Sometimes, you might want to try a different approach. Whether you don’t have the money to buy shampoo or want to try something natural. I’ve compiled a list of home remedies for greasy hair which I find extremely helpful. All of these can be implemented into a daily or weekly routine.

Use conditioners sparingly

If you’re going to use conditioner, it’s definitely a smart idea to use it sparingly; only use it on the tips. It would be a good idea to cut out conditioner all together if you can, they provide moisture to your hair which only adds to the greasiness.

Avoid brushing hair too much

Believe it or not, brushing your hair too much can actually make the greasiness worse. By constantly brushing your hair, you are distributing the oil throughout your hair.

Wash hair every day

Washing hair every day is the simplest remedy on this list. By washing your hair every day, it removes the build-up of grease and oil.

Dry Shampoo

If you don’t have time to do a proper wash, you can use a dry shampoo to soak up all that excess oil. You can buy these in the store or make your own using different ingredients. For lighter hair, arrowroot powder or cornstarch is best. Dark hair will need darker ingredients, like cocoa or cinnamon powder. Mix these with lavender or peppermint oil for some extra benefits, as well as a lovely scent.

Lemon juice

Once you have washed your hair with shampoo, massage the lemon remedy throughout your hair. Leave the mixture in hair for 5 minutes. Once the time is up, rinse hair with lukewarm water. Repeat twice a week.

Surprisingly, vinegar beauty remedies were all the go in the 19th century. Vinegar can be used as an alternative to remove all excess shampoo, oil, and grime from your roots. To use vinegar, mix two tablespoons of vinegar in a bottle of water. Give it a shake. Once you have washed your hair, massage the vinegar remedy throughout your hair. Rinse with cold water. A vinegar remedy can hold amazing results if you can bear the smell.

Egg Yolks

Because egg yolks contain sulfur, they are great at reducing greasy hair, plus they get rid of dandruff. They also contain some ingredients that add strength while softening your hair and making it shine. You can beat some yolks by themselves or mix them with a bit of honey, olive oil, or tea tree oil. Then apply the mask to your dry hair, leave it on for up to 20 minutes, then wash your hair as usual.

Alcohol rinse

Alcohol possesses the ability to dry hair – which is extremely effective for greasy hair. The higher the alcohol content, the more effective it is. I recommend using half a cup of vodka or beer with water to create this mix. Once your hair is washed, lather the remedy throughout your hair. Pay extra attention to your roots. Let the mix settle in your hair for 10 minutes. Wash thoroughly with warm water, or even better, cold.
