Essential Oil for Hair Recipes

You can use many of these essential oils by themselves to improve the health of your hair. But there are some combinations that can increase the benefits. This means you can battle more than one hair issue at a time, with great results.

#1 – Essential Oil Deep Hair Conditioner:

Every hair type can use a deep conditioner once in a while. This will help keep your hair healthy, with balanced moisture and less breakage.

For this recipe, you need:

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp shea butter
  • 1 tsp Argan oil

A few drops of your favorite essential oil. Any of the ones on our list above could be used for this recipe. But lavender, peppermint, rosemary, or clary sage are the best for this purpose.

First, melt the coconut oil and the shea butter. You can use the microwave or a double boiler, whichever you prefer. When they are heated and smooth, let them cool. Then add the Argan and essential oils and whip the mixture for 3-5 minutes. Comb the finished conditioner through your clean, dry hair. Allow it to soak in for about half an hour, then rinse it. Wash your hair with shampoo, making sure you clear out all the conditioner. Then dry your hair and style it as usual.

#2 – Essential Oil Hair Mask:

Heat styling, sun damage, pool chlorine, and color treatments can all cause damage. For hair that is in need of a bit of TLC, try out this hair mask. It will add strength and shine, and could even add somebody to those who need it.

For this recipe you need:

  • 1-2 tbsp Argan Oil
  • 3-5 drops Rosemary essential oil
  • 3-5 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 3-5 drops Tea Tree essential oil

If you have longer hair, you may need to double these amounts for full coverage.

Mix all the ingredients together. Apply the mixture to dry hair, rubbing it gently into your hair and scalp. Tuck your hair into a shower cap and leave it this way for one hour. You can also place a warm, damp towel over the cap if you’d like. Then rinse the mixture out with warm water. Shampoo and condition your hair using your normal products. You may need to repeat this to remove all the oils. Dry your hair and style as usual.

#3 – Essential Oil Hot Oil Treatment:

Hot Oil

Another way to nourish your hair is to use a hot oil treatment. It can help reduce breakage and improve damaged hair.

For this recipe you need:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 6 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • 4 drops Rosemary essential oil
  • 2 tsp Jojoba oil
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

Pour 1-2 cups of water in a medium saucepan and bring it to a boil. Turn it down to low heat and let the water simmer. Place the olive oil, the Jojoba oil and the coconut oil in a heatproof bowl and put it over the water. Simmer the combined oils for 5 minutes. Then remove the bowl from the heat. Let the oils cool a bit, but make sure they are still warm. Add the essential oils and stir the mixture. Begin applying the hot oil mixture to your hair. Do this by dipping your fingertips in the oil and gently massaging it in. Start at your scalp and work your way down to the ends of your hair. When your hair is completely coated, cover it with a shower cap. Leave it on for about 30 minutes, then shampoo your hair. You may need to shampoo more than once to remove all the hot oil from your hair.

#4 – Essential Oil Shampoo:

Making your own shampoo is safer than most of the store-bought brands. This is because it will be natural and free of unwanted chemicals. Depending on your hair needs, which essential oils to use may vary. The rest of the ingredients will stay the same.

For this recipe you need:

  • ¼ cup canned coconut milk
  • ½ cup liquid castile soap
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp Vitamin E oil

40-50 drops essential oils (total for all the oils, not for each one)
For a flaky scalp, use 10 drops each of lavender, tea tree, lemon, and rosemary essential oils.

For hair loss, use 10 drops each of peppermint, lavender, cedarwood, and rosemary essential oils.

Choose the bottle you want for your shampoo. A squeeze bottle is best, but you can use any bottle you like. Combine all the ingredients in the bottle. Put the lid on and shake the contents well. Your shampoo is ready to use. Keep in mind, you will need to shake the bottle each time you use your shampoo. This will ensure a proper mixture each time.

#5 – Essential Oil Hair Wax:

Now that we’ve taken care of cleansing and reducing breakage, it’s time to style with wax.

For this recipe you need:

  • 1 oz organic beeswax
  • 1.5 oz shea butter
  • 2 oz jojoba oil
  • 1/8-1/4 tsp essential oil (total using equal parts of all the oils)

For normal hair, use peppermint and rosemary essential oils. For oily hair, use thyme, tea tree, patchouli, lemon and basil essential oils. For dry hair, use sandalwood, lavender, rosemary, and chamomile essential oils. For dandruff, use patchouli, tea tree, clary sage, and eucalyptus essential oils.

Place some water in a pot and bring it to a boil. Then lower the heat to simmer. Put the beeswax in a heatproof bowl and place it over the water. Melt the beeswax, then add the shea butter. When it has melted and mixed with the beeswax, add the jojoba oil. Stir it and remove the bowl from the heat. Pour the mixture into a jar or container. Let it cool a bit, then add the essential oils. Now your hair wax is ready to use.
